why would a site go from 500 pages indexed to 90 pages to ten pages in a matter of two weeks with no significant changes to the site?

Be patient. The same happened to us but everything is fine again. 2 weeks ago we lost all our indexed pages for no apparent reason. They all came back in the past few days.
