Site down - effect on google ranking

I am afraid I know the answer...

One of my sites recently got #4 in google rankings.

My domain went into Redemption Period this weekend. It expired and I never received the renewal notice (though I should have marked the date, lesson learned). The site has been down for about 24 hours and hopefully will be back up in the next 24. You folks think my google ranking will go into the can because of this? Does down time have an effect on future rakings when Google next dances?

Thanks!

If it's 48 hours, you're probably ok. G doesn't dump things that quickly... if it were a week or more, it could go missing.

Get it back up asap though.

Thanks for the reply. It is being pulled out of redemption now and should be back up "within 4 business days."

Man, I am going to be on razors until then... hopefully it will be towards the earlier side of those 4 days...

Google now strips all existing in bound links from a page when it expires. I am not sure if this will effect you though as it is more likely that this only occurs when the domain goes up for public sale.

I certainly hope it doesn't apply.. the site has been up since '98 and has TONS of presence in google. I definitely caught it before it went up for Public Sale, which is good.

I wish this were always the case. I have a competitor who scooped up an expired domain from a government site (.com, not .gov) that had over 400 existing backlinks showing in Google. Needless to say, his site is doing quite well.

It's back. Was down for about 4 days (3 and a half). Hoping that didn't kill me...

In my experience, you wont't have any problems.

I had a PR 6 site that was accidentally 403'ed for 2 months. No harm done .. came right back in a couple of weeks.

Depending on your PR, Googlebot can be invited back almost instantly.

Sadly, it disappeared (went from 4 to 73). Hopefully it will reincarnate soon... thanks for the info and opinions, everyone.

I think you should be fine in 3 - 5 weeks time. We lost once 90% of all links as we moved our server to a new hosting provider and it took around 4 weeks to have them back in the index.

That's good news. The site had been popular in search engines for a while, but dropped out. It made a strong comeback and then BOOM, the site was down... hopefully it will get another shot.
