how would Google handle search results page for widget and widgets?

Both yield the same results

If you search for widget and widgets, the results are exactly the same. the only thing is the META tags which incorporate the "search name" automatically.

How does Google or other SE handle this? Ignore the least linked one, both, or the entire site? It's with the plural, when there's a space and with the .com.
Example, for Green Widgets: Green Widgets, GreenWidgets and GreenWidgets.com are linked as searches from the sitemap as
/results.asp?respective_term . Also on the "Widget" search page, the rest of the combinations are linked minus the "Widget".
Penalty waiting to happen or...?
The search engine user is not being tricked IMO...
