"Recently the search industry leader retained rights to the Russian version of their domain name. Google has had a Russian interface since 2002, but it wasn't until April 3, 2004 that Google received rights to Google.ru.
Until now, Russian users who typed Google.com into the browser were forwarded to Google.com.ru. www.google.ru was being used by Avalanche, a Russian company that got the domain from Denis Gledenov, an infamous Russian domain investor."
