Question about keyword density and content

Will you get penalized if density is too high?

Hi

I have been doing pretty well on the big G with a couple of keyword phrases and hit the 4th page about 4-5 weeks ago. I then saw little movement and decided to optimise my home page a little more for these keywords.

Rankings then dropped radically. Will G penalise you if it thinks you are trying to spam it with the same phrase on the home page? What is the ideal keyword density?

Also, I never had a popup on the home page until the drop happened. Does Google see popups as a negative?

Any help will be greatly appreciated.
