Facet One - the top level of my site is a hybrid of... a standard business web site to inform visitors about services offered through my online services business and portal to direct people to sites created by my service. [site_name_x.com...] (obviously a fake url for example sake)
Facet Two - is an internal password protected area that lets subscribers of my service create their own site.
Facet Three - is a large number of independent sites that utilize my service to display their own site. [site_name_x.com...]
Facet One - has been search optimized and I market the site with Google AdWords.
Facet Two - I do not do anything with and it is not spidered as it is password protected.
Facet Three - My subscribers market their site independently in addition to my efforts for the portal. In their marketing efforts they link their site all over the internet.
My question is will Facet Three count as a link exchange in the eyes of google? or will a link exchange only be counted for my site when the user defined URL is added to a true 3rd party site? Also when someone searches for my domain will my customers sites then be nested under my results or will they come up independently? I'm assuming they'll be nested, but I'm not sure.
Any answers would be helpful and if my description was not clear let me know so that I can revise it.
