I have just being trying to find something in Google as Joe Public and my experience provides an objective view of the SERPs. My better half and I have an invitation to a Birthday party and I needed a false moustache and wig in a hurry so I wanted a local supplier. I thought this would be a no brainer for Google.

I did a search for "fancy dress + Glasgow". After ploughing through four or five pages of irrelevant results and directories for companies all over the world I thought I would try Yahoo. The site in position three provided exactly what I needed.

I went back to Google and checked the top 100 results and there was not a single one of them relevant to my search. This was not a complex search and one which I fully expected to produce the results that I needed. This example is a shocking indictment of the new Google.

Many searches are producing lists of portals who use tricks to capture traffic. Google obviously rates these very highly even though the vast majority of them are totally irrelevant. Clearly there is something wrong here and I have to say that I am now finding that Yahoo results are much better. How long until the public starts to notice?
