Here is a story of a site I am involved with:

The domain name expired by mistake and the status of the domain changed.

Google stopped listing the site after the site was down for a few days.

The domain was renewed and new name servers assigned.

After 6 days downtime, the site was back and Google re-visited the site a matter of hours after the site was up again.

Less than 10 days later, the site has a much higher PageRank than before (one which makes more sense anyway), it comes up significanly higher in the SERPs for many very popular keyphrases.

What initially appeared to be a bad situation getting worse, it has actually worked out much better.

When the site was dropped, I emailed Google (3 weeks ago) and they have yet to respond.

Something to bear in mind.
