Googling a Call Waiting #?

What I want:

a) a modem on my computer that reads the call waiting number of inbound calls.
b) auto starts a routine that "googles" the #...

I can do B, but I can't seem to find a.

Most modems have caller ID but it is disabled by default. Try the setup string AT%CCID=1, AT#CID=1, AT+VCID=1 or RTFM.

Brett,
Let us know if you get this to work. I'd love to see if this setup could work also, especially if you could delay answering the call until you figure out who is calling. You could also set this up to create an answering machine out of a PC, using the soundcard to deliver the outgoing message, and to record the incoming message. A database system would record the time and date of the call, as well as the caller's number, name, address, etc., and the incoming message. If this tied into a contact management system like Outlook, ACT!, or Goldmine, it would be fantastic. I'm kind of surprised it doesn't exist already.

Hehe - tell me when it's ready, I'll use VOIP to spoof the ANI and CallerID so you think you're getting urgent messages from the Pope.

And this post is in Google News forum because _____________?

Valid question. Brett, can we talk?

Let's re-title "Google News" just like "Yahoo." Which is titled "Yahoo." No "!" So, the title for Google News would be: "Google"

Why? THIS is Google News:

Thanks.

Before you get too excited, many contact management databases already use caller-id to pop-up the relevent contact listing, including the above-mentioned "Act".

I haven't heard of one that ties it into a Google search, though, but I wouldn't think it'd be too hard to write for a programmer sufficiently motivated.

Stupid question, but did you search Google for it? :)

Cool idea, Brett. What modem do you have and what operating system do you run? Lemme know if you get it going. [caller id windows] seems to find a few leads to check out.

Last week I was in a computer surplus store, and I found a Focus CommandPost for $10 (used to cost $200). It's just a USB widget that you hook up and then you can push buttons and shuttle/jog the dial and send the events to the computer. Fun stuff..

Hollywood, if I weren't cheap I'd be a gadget hound. This is just a doohickey that sends events to the computer, like a MIDI keyboard or controller almost (except using USB instead of the joystick port). Then you run a TSR program on Windows or a daemon on Linux to listen for those events, and you can map them to any action you want. I've got a cheapy Archos 6 gig mp3 player I listen to at work, and it's annoying that it doesn't learn which songs I like/dislike. So I was thinking about hooking this doohickey up to xmms (Linux mp3 player) and then I could fast-forward, skip, or give positive/negative feedback as I listen to my mp3's.

Man, I am such a geek. Anyway, you asked. Next time you won't be so eager to peek behind the curtain into the not-so-glamorous life of GoogleGuy. :) Next time on "Geekin' with GoogleGuy," we'll show you how to make a nightlight out of one LED, two wires, and a soundcard.

Man, I am such a geek.

I now trust you more than ever, GG. ;)

Where I live, second-hand shops have nothing of that sort. Nada. Nil. It's stifling my inner geek.

Regarding the caller ID popup and subsequent search, if a telemarketer calls, would it link to a list of known telemarketer numbers to warn you, perhaps?

PBG,

I'm just teasing as automated queries are against Google's TOS as we've discussed on this board over and over again.

I'm kind of surprised it doesn't exist already.

It does exist.

Our 3com phone system runs through the office lan. When a call comes in a small caller id popup appears on screen. Can also click a name in Outlook or any other app that supports TAPI to dial through the phone. Lots of other cool features like automatically sending voicemail to email etc...

About $20K but worth every cent.

Most call centers also have applications that tie incoming calls with information in their databases and bring up the customer details.
