BMach ... I have two one page sites and another domain with 50 plus pages. All have pretty much the same back links and the PR is the same on all three.

If it's getting a lot of PR from one link, probably not. If it has a lot of links, then yes it might perform well.

I'm aware of two different sites, one with a PR of 5, and one with a PR of 6, that have a robots.txt of:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /*

IE, all search engines go away and don't spider my site. Obviously, those sites will only get hits from terms in thier URL (since that's all Google has on them)-but both are in the top five of searches for that term.

So, yeah, you can have a fairly high PR with no spiderable content whatsoever.

Regardless of PR, a good strategy is to put the content there. If someone Googles for foo, widgets and money, your page will not show up in the SERPS unless your page is using those words.

I have seen pages come up that don't contain words in my search terms even once. Not even in their source code. I think google is a bit more complex than that...

There are only two ways for a site to show up on any one word:

1. The words are on the web page.
2. Other people link to that web page with those words in the text of the link.

The second one can, and has been, abused. If you don't like somebody or something using insulting terms, then if you search for those terms thier website will come up. It's called "Google Bombing".

Yes, a one-page site can have high PageRank. Generally sites with content do better than sites with little content, and of course sites with lots of pages usually have more words that can match users' queries. Things like tutorials and 101-style intros and information are especially good. Oh, and glossaries. Glossaries are a great way to define words that users will type when they want the info on your site.
