Promoting & surfacing original content in Google News

The site I'm working on went from being a one-person ezine (that gives you an idea of when it was started) to a being harvested as a 'news site' for googlenews & moreover, though it's still pretty much written by one person (so now I guess it's a blog...)
We've hit a ceiling in terms of surfacing as a news site -- in part, I think, because googlenews seems to have added more sources recently...The content is original & updated frequently, when people can find it, they do read it.

I'd like to tap the collective wisdom for ideas of promoting the site as a news source.
Some of what I've tried --

-- All our headlines contain our main site key word / subject matter, so that we show up better on google news & alerts, moreover feeds and newsletters. (It makes for some very boring/pedantic headlines but otherwise the content gets lost in the flow).

-- Registered the site on blog indexes + RSS indexes
