Pagerank recognition

Hi guys, complete novice so have a very basic question, which I can't find the answer to in the forums.
I have a new website, couldn't get it spidered (lack of patience I guess) so hit on the idea of adding googling ads.
Sure enough my site appears in google a couple of hours later.
My question is when will my page rank be calculated and recognised by google toolbar, or has it already and it is just zero? If zero, does this mean I've been penalised?
Too much of a novice to have deliberately done something wrong but would be interested in opinions.

Possible. PR is calculated based on the PR contributed by those pages that link to you. Do you have incoming links from other sites? The number of links and the PR of those links will give you a rough idea.

If zero, does this mean I've been penalised?

Not necessarily. Could be your PR hasn't been calculated. Could be your PR is less than '1'.

many thanks, have about a 25 page site and about 5 inbound links recognized by google (working on this). So I guess it is down to patience.
Just couldn't find any confirmation that PR isn't calculated when you are indexed. Thanks again

PR is only updated on the toolbar periodically. Whether Google uses more of a running update for their own purposes is hard to say.

There used to be a pretty regular monthly update cycle, but this year they've gone away from that, so we're all a bit at sixes and sevens on what happens when now.

Google's page rank used to take about 1-2 months to update.

This was partly due to the various datacenters and the convergence aspect.

Now it seems PR is updated daily, although 'real pr' and 'toolbar pr' are seperate things.

I have found a link that talks about pr updates on a daily basis.

Pagerank and links have updated but the serps have not!.

I was under the impression that the PR updates are only a "visable" update now. They are in fact calculated into the serps on an almost daily basis. So we have seen a PR update today, but shouldn't expect to see much changes in the serps.

Is that the way that all of you understand this?

Yay! I noticed a bump in my pagerank to...I now have a 4 on my front page and a 3 on my other pages...I have a long ways to go lol...

As for people saying pagerank is being updated daily, I personaly think that is true. For example, when I transfered my site to my new server, my pagerank "disapeared" for a day, but after that it all came back.

EDIT: Oh, by the way, what are serps? I am not a google expert unfornately...

New here, are you? Welcome! On this planet we have a saying "I know just enough to be dangerous."

If you're trying to tweak your site's position in the search results, you've by definition gone beyond "innocent novice" and gotten into "uncontrolled tampering with the fabric of the universe."

Most of the tricks that occur to ex-innocent-novices today occurred to commercial porn spammers five years ago. The search engines that couldn't automatically spot and punish such tricks ... soon died.

The surviving search engines are not kind to novice would-be manipulators. This may not comport with your concept of an ideal planet, but our other planets have lousy weather, so we mostly stay here and make do.

today my PR went up a few #'s on 3 different sites, and backlink count went way up,
but now its gone again, back to its original rank and linkcount for all 3 sites...
any ideas whats up?

I was just surfing my site (I do it every once in a while to make sure no pages are messed up), and I noticed that a lot of my review pages had a pg of 0, while all the other pages have a pg of 3 (front page of 4). Here is the strange thing thou, the sites with a pg of 3 are no deeper than my review pages, and all my review pages can be recahce from my front page. Now, here is yet another stange thing. A page located in www.can't tell.com/archives/2004/january_march_archives_2004/newgameboy.htm has a pg of 3, while my review pages are all at www.can'ttell.com/something/something.htm and they have pgs of 0 and are also accessbal from my front page. The world may never understand google...LOL

P.S. That page which is way down was made before i knew much about the google spider...now i know better ;-)

EDIT: Well, I think I see what is going on. If I were to move all my index pages for the certain catagory to my main directory, google may index them better and fix my problem. I relized this, becvause the page linking to the page stored way down was in my top directory. My site is goign to be so unorgainized thou....it already is unorgainized...LOL. Luckily FrontPage is great for file organization and will be able to automaticaly edit the pages to link to the right pages when i move them...

Directory structure has nothing to do with PR. It is all about linking.

My site had a PR of 5 and 244 backlinks.
Today I am showing a PR of 6 and 136 backlinks.

The PR went up, but the number of backlinks went way down?

Anyone have any Idea what is happened.

PS. I am not complaining, this just goes against everything I have been taught about SEO.

I have to disagree with you there (about directory structure not counting). First of all I have read a ton aobut it here, and secound of all, moving my pages to a uper more directory did increase my pagerank on those pages.

Whatever you read here, it's all the same. Directory structure is totally meaningless. What matters is linking, ang the PR of the pages you get links from. site.com/page.html that has a single link from site.com will have a lower PR than site.com/directory/anotherone/another/onemore/page.html if the latter is linked from the main page *and* fifty (or one) other pages.

oh, I am sorry...I was misreading a little...sorry about that...anyways as for the person who said he has less backlinks now...I have heard that pages with 4 and up page rank are showing up when you do a link search only. Don't take my word for it ;-)

Here are a few things I've noticed on a couple of new sites (less than a year old). The past few months as those sites (index pages) have increased in PR, Googlebot has gone deeper and deeper into their pages. Also, after PR updates, there isn't an immediate increase in traffic to those sites, but as Googlebot makes it rounds over the next few weeks, the pages that are hit again or for the first time in these domains start to show improved rankings. This didn't use to happend (pre six months ago) this is something new and I don't think I would have noticed it if we didn't have new domains within Google.

That is kind of what is happening to me, my front page has 4, and some of the other main pages have 3, however most of the deepers pages (my review and content pages), have no pagerank (or a pagerank under 1).

How do u check which sever is updated, is it trial and get method or is there any other way to check the update on each datacenter at the same time.

My site was PR5 last update and then I thought this time it is updated to PR6(I saw it once), but again it is PR5, which center is the updated one.

It is a trail and error unless somebody else posts a list of updated datacenters. At WebmasterWorld there used to be that kind of information when the 'monthly' update had a bigger effect (Google-dance) than now on the results.
