Seems the explosion in domains now creating a subdomain just for links has started.
mydomain.com
directory.mydomain.com
I wonder how google see's this. While its obvious to me at least its an attempt to appear non-reciprocal i wonder if its as easy as that. While subdmains are seen as totally different domains then i see no reason why it shouldnt work but Google seems to be more and more collapsing networks to appear as a single entity. Opinions then. Are the these reciprocal or non-reciprocal? My guess is that you have a link from a site that will have been itself froma single source which in theory should make it of little value as seen by Google. While it works short term because you expect to recieve a link from an active domain long term you wil get the links more and more from the subdomain directories too.
