Competitor Widget Co.
www.competitorwidgetco.com
and then he gets a listing underneath it for the keyword I searched for, thereby taking up two spaces on the results like this:
Blue Widgets at Competitor Widget Co.
www.competitorwidgetco.com/blue_widgets.cfm
Then that page. just lists all the blue widgets they offer. This is a serious issue for me because it determines wether my site is above the fold or not. Does anyone know why this happens and how I could make my own results return both my base domain and a sub page? It'd be nice to take up more space on the results :)
I've experimented with creating a blue_widgets.cfm page for my site and placing it in the root directory. It got a PR of 3 so far but nothing in the SERPS. Any insight on this issue? Thanks.
Google will rank a page for keywords based on external and/or internal anchor text links for that keyword even if there is no mention of 'blue widgets' on the main page.
Thats why it beats me why "g" is doing it ....
Makes me look greedy as all hell in the serps ....
And costs me band width from the compaetition keep looking at the hot wired "g" cache to see why it happens ....
Yes I know I could just pull the pages ..
problem is they are the ones where the info and " buy me " links are ...
You can controll how close you have optimised both pages by changing the google preferences to say 20 listings per page. If they are both within the top 20, you'll get the indented listing. Same goes for 30, 40, 50 listings pp and so on.
I always crosslink related pages at my sites. In most cases, i get rewarded with an indented listing.
Example:
1 page about Green Widget History
1 page about Green Widget Future
Crosslink both and enjoy the indented listing for "Green Widgets".
/widgets/red/
/widgets/green/
/widgets/blue/ Within each category you have product pages. Each category is tightly themed. So,
/widgets/red/ is for red widgets. Inside /widgets/red/ are the support pages. There would be a main product page that discusses red widgets. There may be an FAQ about red widgets. There may be a technical page on red widgets, etc. All of these pages are tied together through the navigation structure. They each link to one another. The main category is linked to from major sections of the site (main navigation).
Google ranks all the pages for the keyword combination. Then it will remove all but the top two from each site from the list.
After the second listing from any site, there will be a link to [see more results from example.com].
If both of these results are going to show up on the same result page, the lower one is moved up underneath the higher one and indented.
Your competitor might actually have enough pages that rank so high that if they were not limited to two results, they might fill the whole first page of results.
