Why is 301 the recommended solution? What does 302 mean to a SE like G and PR?

many thanks,

301 means that the page you're redirecting from will be removed from the Google index and the new page will be added.
As for PageRank, there is no point in trying to pass PR from a page if it has nothing to do with the text that is linking to it.
Sticky me the URL's you are redirecting from and to and I might be able to understand what you're trying to accomplish. Every situation tends to be different so 'rules of thumb' are hard to come by.
