The DMOZ factor

Part of google's recent big change?

There's been a lot of talk about not being spidered and not being listed in Google. Also a lot of talk about quality listings that are now in the toilet.

Could part of it be the DMOZ factor?

Are you in DMOZ?
Have you kept your rankings through the recent Google changes?
Are your non DMOZ sites starting to fail?

Knock on wood, my non dmoz sites are doing just as well now as before, if not better. Could be that the sites aren't super competitive though.

One of my sites recently accepted in DMOZ, and gradually other DMOZ-powered directories, has just suffered huge drops for most key phrases where it used to be in the top 10. A fairly niche industry too. Another non-DMOZ site in the same business has been less affected, but affected all the same.

My site has never been listed in either DMOZ or in Yahoo directory. In spite of it I'm ranked in top ten in a very competitive area.
I wouldn't bother to much about this, as G seems to handle links from these dirs as any other (good) link from elsewhere,

BUT

if I look at the first ten, the first FOUR are included in DMOZ, and the second SIX (including me) are NOT!

I saw I am not longer included in Dmoz for some reasons, any idea why the took me off?

Google is still showing my description and a link to the category in Google directory; althought I am no longer there.

I have never been boosted by PR from dmoz since I have always been in deep categories with almost no PR.

Remember that dmoz aims to list the best sites for its users, so the larger and more comprehensive sites are often listed without ever having been submitted. If an editor's looking for sites to list then Google is one of many useful resources available. Hence well ranking sites will get noticed, poorly ranking sites won't.

Nicke - are you sure you're not in Dmoz any more and your site's not just been moved to another category? That's happened to me before and I thought my site had been dropped before I worked out they'd just rearranged some stuff.
