Where a visitor actually knows the exact name of the company, and that the name is unusual, one could perhaps expect that such a search would produce the site. It has done so on all our test sites until last night.
e.g. Bronowski Bros Brass Widget Company
What now appears are directories in which the site is listed.
Another tweak needed perhaps?
My company's corporate site was no 1 for six months for company name location, only to be relegated and replaced by twenty sites all which pointed to our site. Usually they were ad sites that listed ours through espotting or overture. Ridiculous really.
The only solution to this problem is creating your own directory which points to your own content. Not something that is good for our company site.
I do seem to remember that the original was in fact usually horizontal on the plate and sort of peachy ( definately not "real meat" ) coloured ....
funny tho ..I don't remember the rest of the plate just containing things that merely said they were "real food" ..or just containing references to "real food" ...
Guess it's not "g"'s fault after all that the standard in it's cafe has gone down and not much tastes like "real food" in it anymore ..
Bloody Vikings..!
More spam anyone ....sorry you gotta wait for the next "**date" SSSSSHHHHH ..I don't want to tempt fate ..... :)
Given that the name is in the title and the body, it does seem very strange that Google believes it is less relevent that sites which link to it.
It's like looking in a map index of the UK for 'london' and finding all the places that have signs pointing to 'london' first.
People could end up in Luton for God's sake.
Spam now being served at (or by ) "googleplex" .....at a monitor near you ....
As a name for a transport caf' ..I can't see it 'll catch on ....
Sounds more like the noise you'd make afer eating too much spam .....
bit like calling to Hughie or god after drinking too many newkee broons .... :)..think on it a wee while..
Don't the "relevant" directory spammy serps make you just want to googleplex ....?
Ooops.... sorry think I mean "designed" to look like the other "real meat" on the plate ...........
With a side helping of new "plate coloured" adwords .....
Indistinguishable from the "real meat" on your plate ....
Except by the location ....
"Is that a blue dividing column bar on your plate Sir?"
"Don't you worry Ma'am ..we'll have it removed in an "update" "...( ummm .. sorry again I meant a minute ...)
( So hard to keep up with my semantics ....)
I must get me an upto date book on the subject ...
"No problem ...right here on your plate .....
In with the food ( where it'll all be soon enough )" ..
How helpfull of this caf' .....
( unlooked for "extras" )
Books on food ..
Right here on your plate ...from "spamazon".....( good friend of the management ).......
Personally I won't be happy with the service at this caf until I get a spinning "complimentary" "coke" logo at the top of my plate .....
Wont have to wait long now .........
This isn't specifically about having a directory serp showing over the site directed to, it's more about my disgust with the things in general.
It has gotten absolutely ridiculous lately, having directory after directory served up as "results" in G. I was trying to find an auto parts store in my area yesterday for a brake caliper on my jeep. I tried for about 30 min's and got nothing but bs directories, mostly in other countries, despite me modifying the search every way I could think of. I moved to a different SE and got somewhat better results, but still mostly directories.
Some of those directories just linked to other directories. All in all, it was a total waste of time, and if I had a current Yellow Pages, I would have been much better off. There's one tossed in the back of the jeep somewhere and I'm going to find it.

UPDATE March 23
Lo and behold .... one has come back to be No.1 again
Will keep checking for the others.........with fingers crossed
Your problem is you don't really 'know' what your searching for. You think you are searching for is a specific product in a specific area. But you are wrong, because Google knows better. He (I guess it's a he, but the way it has a funny turn every month, it could well be a she) knows what you want is a range of similar results to give you the best 'choice'.
Therefore it decided to list lots of possibilities instead of a few. This is obviously google's solution to giving people what they want. Just give them everything.
That's why whever someone orders corned beef, they get spam. Or when they ask for chicken in bread crumbs, you get spam. You can't go wrong with spam. Just ask the vikings.
I use the word claim 'cos I know of at least 4 which say they link to me ..With "unclickable" links ..or my Url in "visible body" ..but the...click opens somewhere else ..not "chez moi"....Corse they also used my description around the "link" to make you do the click ....
Now would that be "Spam" pronounced "Scam"....?
To see how many pages "g" has for one of my sites ..
I did ....site:www.mysite.com....
"g" dutifully gave me back a list of pages including some that I changed since soooooo long ago ...!
Also gave me back ....
www.mysite.com/cpanel..
and
www.mysite.com/whm...
With under these two......
"related pages"
.....so wondering what could be related to my "control pages" ( have had server hacked 3 times in 2 months ...so more than a little interested here! )..
I followed the link ...
Wow ...
"g" says that "related to my "cpanel" Or "WHM" are .....
Six of my competitors ( whom I don't link to from my site! )...
24 "aff directories " who claim to link to me ( but dont ..just show my url and "snippets" ) but actually run "adwords" and link only to the urls mentioned in their "adwords"....
ie... the "directories" contain 4 adwords per page ( always for the same sites )...
and all the text and links shown in their directory "body" actually dont link to the sites they say ...but infact are coded to link also just to one of the 4 adwords sites ..with aff' info intact ..
And 3 pages whom I actually do link to ..but from my links page ..certainly not from my control panel!
all the other people who do link to me for real aren't there ...
Anyone know how "g" can think that my name is related via my cpanel to someone elses site?
What point is a "URL" unique pointer to a specific site or page on the web if "g" thinks and lets it become a "backlink?" to anyone who claims it ..?
Surely Google has got this wrong? People use Google as an index(directory) of websites - for Google to show other directory sites above the 'real' site (especially when a few weeks ago things were working so well)is a nonsense. People will start using the directory sites to start their search instead of using Google at this rate!
In other similar threads it is a bit disappointing that GG seems unaware of any problems.
I can only hope that things are being 'repaired' - Googlebot went quiet for a lot of people (lower PR sites?) during the last 4-6 weeks but this week I am seeing a lot of activity - hopefully the SERPS will improve for those affected before too long...
This is obviously google's solution to giving people what they want. Just give them everything.
The logical extension to this is just to serve up everything possibly connected, in no discernable order, and leave it to the surfer to sort out. Google ought to try this - or perhaps they have ;)
I suspect directories do well because by accident they cover all semantic bases. I'm convinced, for example, that my site suffers slightly because I don't sell a particular type of widget that Google thinks should be connected with my KWs. It's not on my site, ergo I'm not that relevant.
This is daft when you think about it: it penalises specialists, encourages directories, and gives (IMHO)
poor results to the surfer.
One solution would be link out to those sites that sell these widgets - bingo, what have I got? I just turned my site into a directory!
