How do non-indexed pages get indexed?

At the moment, my 6 months old site only has links to the homepage and only my homepage is indexed by G.
Do pages only get indexed if they have backlinks?

You can submit URLs to Google. Otherwise Google has to see a reference to them to find them. (It's not psychic, just appears that way.)

They only stay in the index if they do. Backlinks from your own pages count.

Hey reddevil, I'd recommend trying to make sure that sites link to you, and then that you have a site map in place so that Googlebot can find links to your other pages once it visits your home page.

Static text links are much better than javascript/frames/sessionIDs/cookie type stuff.
