At pubcon, there was a forum where one of the panelists mentioned doing linear regression on thousands of sites for a particular keyword/industry to see what keyword densities, words in title tag, link text ratio.... worked. I had a wicked cold so I do not remember who it was, but it tweaked my interest as to how whether this might work.

I tried searching WebmasterWorld and the net for articles about linear regression and optimization but did not find anything current.

Can anyone point me to any articles on this and the results, or has anyone tried this with success. These tools would be very useful given google suggesting they try 5-6 algos a month.

Although I wasn't at pubcon and I haven't examined this topic so far, I want to make a short comment. The investigation of correlations to determine the influence/weight of a factor is a valid and useful method. However, using a linear ansatz for fitting doesn't make sense in most of the cases. Talking more complex functions for the regression curve seems to be useful and necessary.
