I split my site into 2 - the original site is an information directory and the new one is the shopping directory.' In the hope of keeping my position I originally kept the original 'shopping' page in the information site, but with all the links pointing to the shopping site, and duplicated the page in the 'shopping' directory. Occasionally both pages would show up in the listing.

I then implemented permanent redirects for all the shopping pages, but panicked when my visitor numbers dropped and removed them, and went back to the original plan. (the drop in visitors may have been due to other influences I've discovered!).

Now it seems the shopping site has been penalized/disappeared from the google listings, even the new pages I had introduced that don't appear on the original site.

If I do another permanent redirect will google eventually relist the shopping site - and how long do I leave it before panicking again.
