My question is in the 3rd paragraph - skip ahead if you like.

I have a header image that is part of my site's main template. Click the image and you end up at the homepage, the ALT text for this image is the equivalent of:

second-hand widgets for sale by smith & jones

Smith & Jones are the leading manufacturers of widgets and many of my Smith & Jones related serps were zapped by the Florida & Austin updates.

QUESTION:
All of my 40-50 internal static pages have the same header image which links back to the homepage with the same ALT text containing optimised text (see above).

I used to rank well for the keywords/phrases contained within my header img ALT tag. But now those phrases have been zapped from the serps for me. DID MY LINKING STRATEGY LIKELY HAVE ANYTHING TO DO WITH ME BEING ZAPPED (outside top 1000 serps)?

These "5 new, significant algo" changes that Sergey (?) spoke of recently..... maybe penalising excessive internal link structures was one of the changes. I wouldn't blame them because it's not fair that I should be #1 just because I linked all my own pages in a certain way.

Sorry I took so long to actually spit the question out
