A few years back I set up a web site for a cartoon character. The site was done as a joke and information was presented from the perspective of the character. The site included staged photos of a stuffed version of the character doing different crazy things as well as a place where you could ask the character something and he (I) would respond.

The site contained no ads and no commercial content at all, it was purely for fun.

After a while, I noticed that the site wasn't appearing in google, so I emailed them. They said the problem was that the site had a splash page that was very small but that they would take care of it.

With the next google update, and from that point on, that site has been the first result for the name of the character. I strongy suspect that there was some sort of manual manipulation done in google's db that puts the site above everyone else's.
