Hi,

I have a question-if i read this correctly the steps to a successful website being found on google is:

I) Put it Online.
Don't go with virtual hosting - go with a stand alone ip.

Does this mean I should have my website on MY OWN Server? Is this best?

And if so, can I intially keep the server at my office - or is it highly recommended to keep it at a data center.

Or can I get away with Shared Hosting - is this considered the same as Virtual Hosting - and is this a no, no to getting ranked high on the search engines.

Thanks,
Sebyte

Hi sebyte. Welcome to WW.

Shared, virtual or dedicated hosting are all fine IMHO. Doesn't matter if the box is in a datacentre or your bedroom. Just make sure its on a unique IP for best results and get some links so G finds you.

Good luck

Makes not a jot of difference where the site is hosted or how it is for google to rank it.

However, for reliablity, speed, facilities and ease of management then it makes all the difference. Really depends if your site needs to garranteed up 99.9% and how many hits you will get, if its backend integrated into your company etc etc

Hi,

What is the real advantage if any of having your own server-with regards to search engine optimization?

I am not sure if I should get our own server or not.

Right now my big website on average is using on average 8.0 gigabytes a month and my smaller one is using 2.0 gigabytes.

I was thinking on getting my owner server, keeping it in my office.

I dont know if that is a smart move or not.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Thanks,
Sebyte

Sebyte,

Having your own servers is benificial for the control aspect of your servers, you set them up how you want them.

But there are other questions that either involve knowlege or time.

1. Technical abilities for Win or Linux solution.
2. PHP, ASP, CFM or HTML knowledge
3. Connection uptime to ISP.
4. Connection Speed.
5. Redundancy or Backup Solutions.
6. Cost of Hardware and Connection for reasonable speed.
7. If you have multiple sites, you will have a similar IP range from ISP.(outsourced hosting can have multiple ISP IP ranges)
8. Midnight upgrades(low traffic times)

If you or your current employees have the abilities and time to manage then go for it. If not then need to look at cost of additional employee/consultant and weigh the costs with advantages and disadvantages.

Hi,

It sounds like for Search engine optimization there is no benefit for having your own server.

I was thinking on building a bunch of mini websites and linking them to improve search engine optimization.

But I am not sure that this is a good correlation-mini websites connected with better se rankings.
What is the consensus here?

Thanks
