Hi, glad I found this site - it is a godsend.

What I need to know is... I had a site that was reasonably successful and was linked to by many other high-ranking sites. Due to time constraints I had to stop developing the site, the hosting & domain expired and has not existed for over a year.

Now I have set up a new site with very similar content under a new domain name.

If I re-register the old site's domain name and direct it to the new site, will the new site gain significant PageRank from the number of links that still exist on dozens of other sites? Or will it have no effect?

What's the best way to capitalise on this?

Cheers!
Matt

Why can't you just put that content on the old domain name and put things back to how they were?

Because the new domain name is much more suitable for the content of the page.

The old one is not particularly friendly but has a high number of links to it.

You could possibly email the webmasters of the sites that were linking to your old site and ask them to update the links. That has worked for me in the past.

Seems like you could do this by creating a CNAME or A record alias for the old domain to point to the new site.
