where to host...?

We're running a widget directory with many country specific categories. What is the best strategy in order to rank as high as possible in the UK for example on UK widgets? Will that be a second domain (widgets.co.uk) with these specific categories (and drop them from the widgets.com site on order to avoid a dupe content penalty...?)

Any experiences with this...?

Either will get a domain listed in the 'pages from the UK' search (which a lot of people use), but personally I'd prefer a .uk domain and a UK IP.
