I have a little site that's been up now about a month. So far it's popped up in a few SE's. Yesterday I was pleased to see that my site was on google. Today it's gone.
What might have happened here?

Wait a few more days, and try again.

Thanks, it's back again now but only as a partial listing. I've got about 50 pr 4 links comming into it in the last 2 days. Hopefully this will help a little. I have way too many projects on a the moment, lol

It can take several months for the listing of a new site to stabilise. Don't worry about it yet.

You got 50 links in just a few days? I guess that Google will probably see these as lower quality links, that were "arranged" rather than being "organic", and may not give them the full credit that 50 organic links might have received. That many links in a very short time isn't usually "natural" linking.

I don't agree. I've never seen such a behaviour. What if a new company launches, sends out Press Releases and is listed on several news sites. Does that mean that the links are bad?
