i've heard that google doesn't like it when you use something like webposition to check your rankings. what other way is there for me to check my site's ranking?

The only way to automate rank checking with Google without violating their TOS would be to develop your own app using the Google API service [google.com].

There's a few services that will enable you to track rankings if you have an API. The API is free, and you can find those other services by doing a google search for "seocount".
