Since Florida, I have finally made it back to at least page 2 at the top. Now the site that has position #2 has been around awhile, probably 4 years longer then mine, and use to be very very very popular and was linked to by a ton of other sites (mostly smaller fan sites.)
This site is rarely updated with anything anymore (once a month maybe). I can only guess that what keeps this site so high now is its back links. they have about 900 where as I have about 400.
Problem I have is getting more links, the subject matter of my site, while still popular is not as popular as it was 3-4 years ago (when this other site came out).
My site is by far the best site out there for this content,I have 100's of content rich pages and still get a lot of hits from google.
But how do you over come the site that has just been around a lot longer but isn't current anymore? I have got my site added to as many link places as I could find that are worth adding to, but is there anything else I can do?
What also annoys me with Search engine results is that #4 ranking site for these key words hasn't been changed in years and is pretty much useless!
Keywords on both of these sites isn't all that great, so I don't think that is what keeps them so high.
Just wondered if anyone has tried to deal with this before! Would love to hear your thoughts! I have tried to change my site around to make it better, but I can't seem to over come that few sites left. I am new to trying to "optimize" my site for search engines, been fun reading this forum!

Also check things like keywords in title and H1 text, plus the text other sites use to link to you. Download the Google toolbar to look at your site's PageRank, also the PageRank of sites linking to you and to your competitors. That should give you a start. :)
