What to do for optimization now?

Hi, just joined the Forum, although I have been a bit of a lurker for a few weeks:-)

Needless to say, I got shafted by the Florida Update - went from #4 on my keywords to nowhere in the top 200. Also, most sites linking into me are no longer recognised to link to me by Google - I had over 50 relevent sites, linking in using my keywords (the link text was 'Site Name Keywords') and Google now ignores most of them.

More quirky is the fact that other keywords seem to be performing much better now than they ever have, and just recently, my site gone back up 100 places, even though I've done nothing to its content - any reason why?

Anyway, my first question is; I know link text plays *some* importance with Google, but is there any difference between say:

i) Keyword(s) at Sitename
ii) Site Name Keyword(s)
iii) Keyword(s)

As the Link Text

My other question for the masses is, seeing as Google has made a monumental balls up (this isn't sour grapes just because I lost out, just plain fact - you only need to look at the posts to see tens of thousands of well constructed sites have 'dissapeared') what does the future hold? When is the next Google Update going to take place, and will they, in all reality, revert back to pre-Florida ways?

My 'dummy' question is; what exactly is Google Page Rank, and how do I find mine out?

Any help, much appreciated.

Install Toolbar from toolbar.google.com

Read out here in the forums and you will find a lot more abou things like that. Welcome to WebmasterWorld anyways. :-)

Google nominally finished with monthly updates in the summer. There may never be another major update, but my guess would be that one may follow in mid to late January. I doubt that an update as significant as Florida is planned, however, I also doubt that Google realised how significant Florida would be to some people.

I think it is a safe bet that Google will adjust their algos and as a result some sites currently in oblivion will return. This may occur gradually or as a step change. However, I believe it will be many months before mistakes are admitted (privately of course) and any sort of backstep occurs.

Kaled.

I just read the JimWorld gazette where a very interesting argument is presented that the patent for PageRank (which is not owned by Google) and the IPO are what are causing the changes in the regular search results.

Hopefully it is OK to post a link to it - if not just go the site and read the report:

Hi Kaled, nakulgoyal and all geeks,

I realized that the target phrase "blue widgets" appeared around 14 times on the index page, also the anchor text was "blue widgets super". I had a h1 tag, alt tags , title all with "blue widgets", also one bold.

Now I think it caused me the florida harm, now I have changed the title, removed the h1, also reduced the key word density. Now my question is :-

1) Does my other pages (around 100) needs to be changed?each of them is meant for a different topic but each will have atleast 8 times the keyphrase "blue widgets", as these pharses are a part of my menu like "blue widget shops", "blue widgets history"...

2)When can I see a change in my position?

3)Do I need to change the anchor texts from my partners sites?Should I ask them to change my anchor text from "blue widgets" to ..., what will be my new anchor text?

4)Any Site which regained its position beccause of de-optimization?

What else should I do? I am thinking of adding a sitemap, what else can I do?

If you have any answers, please pen it down for me, it will be highly appreciated.

Thanks
Aji

Aji,

I was advised by Googleguy on this forum to relatively same questions that adding content, not worrying about reciprocal links, adding a sitemap, no cloaking and making a user friendly site with lots of unique content should help. Googleguy specifically said that I should not worry about links and take a hint from this.

Thanks nileshkurhade,

But i still I am confused by the fact unique content, If and you are in the same business, we will have most of the content same, I can always add some extra words to make it unique.

What is the true definition of unique content?

I wish I could know, I will do
* SiteMap
* Bad practices I donot do like cloaking(bad sense).

not worrying about reciprocal links

This is an Utopia but never happens that way, Are you sure about this.

>> 1) Does my other pages (around 100) needs to be changed?each of them is meant for a different topic but each will have atleast 8 times the keyphrase "blue widgets", as these pharses are a part of my menu like "blue widget shops", "blue widgets history"...

=============================================

If your intention to make the changes is to rank higher in G serp, my advice would be - "NO"; it is better to divert your precious time for something else.

>> 2)When can I see a change in my position?

==============================================

At the mercy of Google!

>> 3)Do I need to change the anchor texts from my partners sites?Should I ask them to change my anchor text from "blue widgets" to ..., what will be my new anchor text?

==============================================

Also NO - It simply wastes your time, IMO.

>> 4)Any Site which regained its position beccause of de-optimization?

===============================================

Large percentage of my sites regained their position WITHOUT any deoptimization though not at the same ranking. Actually I have done nothing and most of them are more than 6 months old. Those of the newer ones that suffered from missing index pages during Florida still have not returned.

>>> What else should I do? I am thinking of adding a sitemap, what else can I do?

1) Add more pages and relevant contents if you can.
2) Add site map if you don't have one.
3) If your sites with 100 pages contain different hubs or directory, cross link these hub pages or directories within your own site
4) Looking for incoming links pointing to your hub pages with your prefered "anchor text".

>>> "not worrying about reciprocal links"

=========================

I think the right word should be "not to be too obsessive about reciprocal links".

Talking about keyword density, it seems to me that the ideal density is around 10%, anyone else noticed this?

Tropical Island, that link was a good find. It is well written and does not try to ram unfounded theories down ones throat.

I just wish many of the members here would take heed and stop with silly conspiricy theories. It makes this entire site (WW)look very immature IMO.

I never even bother about KWD. Just write the page to describe the product/service or whatever for a person to read. That is the mix Google wants.

I would say Google only pays attention to a VERY high KWD.

For one highly competitive keyword i am monitoring, the KWD of the #1 is 3%, the #2 has a KWD of 26% (!) which let me think that the KWD means absolutely nothing nowadays.

strangely, where everyone seems to be shouting about KW density .. one of my competitors has stuffed KWs in ALT tags, he uses imagemaps to make extra ALT tags, stuffed keywords in meta tags and where you can place them. He has rised after september. And he ranks in top 5 for keywords like web design country, website design country, website designing country, web designing country, etc... all of them. This site has pr5, not the highest of the all.

Anyone interested to see this site or GG if you think this should not be the case after florida update sticky me and I'll send you the URL. I have tried to send spam reports but in vain.

==========================

No, it is not strange at all. KWD is not the major factor in G ranking and practically it is not worth the time and effort to check what is the KWD of your optimized page, unless you want to do it for fun. The best way is to write your page in a natural way with keyword placements as recommended by SEO standard.

If you have heard about "googlebomb", you will understand that the page can rise to top position without any keyword on that page - so the assumption that KWD will play any significant role in serp is simply not right, IMHO.
