"edu" is a very common word and was not included in your search
When did this lame filter get approved.

I consider any search with +".edu" to be considered as a reliable source for information. We can add +".gov" to the search but cannot add +".edu" anymore. This is a really stupid thing google did.

Use Advanced Search to search only the TLD .edu.

Try Cars +".edu" [google.com]. It works. But, Cars + ".edu [google.com] would bring the edu as a common word.
Or you can always add site:.edu [google.com] to your search.

I think optisoft was suggesting it was silly to exclude this term - not looking for advice on advanced search solutions ;)

Well, I wouldn't consider all .edu sites a reliable source of information anyway-- think of all those undergraduate personal homepages out there :).

edu has been a stopword forever, just like www and com. If you really want to search for the word "edu", you can use quotes or add a plus sign in front of it. If you want only results from universities, you can always do site:edu your search terms
But I don't there's been any changes on this.

I laughed out loud at that one. I try to. :) Hopefully I spoil some unneeded worries with facts too though. :)
