At the end of national NBC news tonight, Tom Brokaw did a story on the rampant, unregulated sale of pharmaceutical on the internet.

A Google spokesperson was interviewed as concerned. The voiceover commented that Google would begin some type of 3rd party oversight to help searchers know which online pharm sites were legit and which were not.

No link to a story yet but the headline tops the NBC Nightly news page.

Yeah maybe Google can take some of the penalties off of Real Estate sites and impose them on illegal drug operations. Argh!

I saw the report - very interesting - something is "brewing"!

The problem being drug laws vary dramatically from country to country. Google is international.

“This is the first area, first product area, where we are employing a third-party verifier,” said Sheryl Sandberg, Google’s Vice President of Global Online Sales and Operations........Google reportedly collects 29 percent of the $3.3 billion online ad market.

Even NBC considers GOogle as the main search engine. It's power and reach are trully monopoly proportions. I think the pharma problem will not go away because in Canada drugs are much cheaper and even several US cities are openly taking advantage of the lower prices. I think it would be difficult for Google to remove these sites.

Do you think that Google might have forgot that it is International?

G still has to play be U.S. rules and regs, so my guess is that they will use geo-targeting to keep showing pharm ads outside the U.S. and "screen" pharm sites in the US.

Could we possibly see a new Google feature? Something like pharmacy.google.com? I wouldn't be surprised.
