For my most competitive keyword there are 2,090,000 websites listed. my site comes in at #188 for this keyword.

What steps should I take to become more competitive for this keyword?

Is it all about the links comming into my site?

It's not all about links coming to your site but it is part of the overall picture.

Content is king

Make sure your title tag has the phrases people would type in to find your products. What you don't want is the name of your company at the beginning of the tag.

Keep your meta tags around the 10 to 15 word mark

Make sure your links use your keywords. For example:

DO

widgets for sale is the link text

DON'T

Widgets for sale Click here

That should do for start :)

Simon.

I do ask for the keyword link but not all sites do that for me. Some just use my address as the link eg. [mysite.com...] my page title inludes my keywords that i ask people to use as the link.

when i search google for sites that link to mine I get nothing. When I search for sites containing my site address I get 5. But I know that I have links from many more sites....but they dont show up at all

Does content refer to that specific page or to the site as a whole?

Might have been good advice pre-Florida, but current No 1 in my market just has his company name + a bit of pleasant waffle.

It's all up in the air now!

"when i search google for sites that link to mine I get nothing"

They have to be pr4+ links to get recognised in the 'link to' request. However, any link will probably be having some positive effect, even a low pr one.

Concentrate on getting higher pr sites to link to you. Once you achieve a home page pr5, you will find your internal pages will probably be pr4 and that is when you are really in the game.

Make each page good quality unique content with focused emphasis on a theme of your sector. Include broad terms here and there to reinforce the theme of your site overall.

If you are in a competitive sector, avoid matching title, h1 and anchor links with the target keyword phrase. Do seo in moderation.

With less competitive searches, pre florida optimisation still seems to work.

If it aint in the Ontology the new algo just can't process it and the default is the old algo, at the moment.

A few of us are kicking about some ideas about Applied Semantics CIRCA technology here

This seems to be the best solution to the Florida Effect so far now that Brett has let the cat out of the bag!

Best wishes

I have never had a problem with this. Neither have all the big shopping sites that I am always hearing complaints about.

It might have made some minor difference at some point, but most of the time it is far more important to have your brand there.

And if you are lucky enough to get indented results, it makes them even more appealing to have your brand right up front on both.

I've got a question for you thehittmann, are your pages *worth* being on the first page?

Of course we all want our page to be number one, and that is worth a lot *to us*, but is it the most important page *to the user*.

If your page is the most important, then it is the page that Google wants to have at #1. The algo will not always work out so that you are in that position, but at least you and Google will be working for the same goal.

The reason that people say that content is king, even during those times that links and other offsite features are more important, is that it is a lot easier to get links to great content.

Ok just a couple things, my Site is a Band Site....So I really want the band name in the page titles.....this has helped getting the pages great SERPS so far. I searched on google for bandname/location i get 1,2,3 spots what im aiming for is a page 1 result just for bandname. But this name is a very common name used in a totally different industry. All of my links comming in are music related sites. There are pr5 and 6 sites that do not show up on google at all for me and havent for months.

Get to the top in serps by creating 50,000 + pages get over 1000+ links pointing to you and then maybe you could be in the top 50 but then again you may not rank in the top 1000 ranking is up in the air.

thehittmann, there's only one thing to be done... they have to change the name of the band. :-)

ADDED: Sorry to have been facetious.

There are pr5 and 6 sites that do not show up on google at all for me and havent for months.

Have you checked to see if they're linking to you in a non-standard form, like "domain.com" rather than "www.domain.com"? Have a look at the source code for the links on their pages just in case.

Do Adwords that’s what I been doing since ages. Spend 100 thousand on it - Google will be happy with you.

I have THE content (1000s of pages - seven editors working 8hrs a day)
I have THE PageRank (Toolbar PR7 equals to MSN and Yahoo in India)
I have THE anchor (Over 4k links with different anchors text)
I have THE links (Direct links from MSN, Yahoo etc.)
I have THE quality/ SEO friendly website...100 thousand users a day, top brand - Huge countrywide PR, very popular etc. etc. etc.

I rank not less than #3 in any given SE other than G, which Ranks me #11 - since last eight months. Why? Because I am a Adwords customer, I spend a lot on Adwords - Just NO ROI (Its nothing about results) - Just spend, Spend and SPEND...While three doorway pages, two dead links, one topica list with 8 users (dead since 2 years) and a irrelevant website is ranking well than you - for no rhyme or reason.

I am sorry Brett :(

Doesnt surprise me on either your analyse of the situ or the resulting conversion of adword sales.

I stopped using these and found that the level of sales continued exactly as before.

Waste of money for me.

A webmasterworld user pointed out that html errors on my pages may have been causing me problems. Just on one of my pages i found i had about 30+ errors.

This is what i get for making small changes every now and then with frontpage. Ive weeded out all the rubbish and validated all my pages to make sure there are no html errors. Hopefully this my improve my SERPS a little next index.
