I want to search for 4" x 6" as a phrase - is this possible?

Nope. Google doesn't index punctuation.
"4 x 6"
is the best you can do.

Yeah, I tried a backslash before the double-quote, but no joy. Its kind of annoying.

backslash would be nice for many things. Like command line option parameters that start with - for instance. But google probably drops those '-" as white space while its splitting html pages into terms ...
