By accident I noticed that if I fun a "link: www.mysite.com" (notice the space between link: and www) rather than "link:www.mysite.com" I get very different results.
What cuases this and what can be learned from it?

When you search ¦link:www.site.org¦ you are seeing the backlinks. When you search ¦link: www.site.org¦ you are looking for pages that have your URL and the word link in them. If you have a look, you'll see that ¦link: www.site.org¦ usually has the word "link" in the description.

Hey, a good one for seeing more backlink pages than link:etc will show is to search "www.site.org". That will show all the text occurences of the URL on other pages. It roots out all my dmoz clone backlinks that are under PR4.

Yeah, that's what I normally do. It also has the benefit of finding stuff on many forums and Yahoo! groups. That info has come in handy in the past.
