For some types of penalties, linking to 'bad neighbourhoods' has caused penalties (ODP categories were penalised at times on dmoz.org).

I don't think you can 'catch' the newer, phrase-focused penalties in the same way.

ciml, can you describe a bit more on that? The category am editing had PR3 after adding afew sites (from 13 to 33) it now has PR0 but sub-cats have PR3 as before .. The sites are clean business sites ..

seofreak, if it's a clean category I suspect you just need to wait another PR update for it to settle. The penalised category I can remember (there were a few) was to do with cross-linking networks, a rather special case. :-)

ciml,

What do you define as a "cross-linking network"? Any idea when the next PR update will be?

Ciml,

What do you mean By 'bad neighbourhoods'..? If i am not missing some thing, Do you mean by bad neighbourhoods is both the sites from the same company, Both the sites using partialy same content, both the site hosted on the same server, Or you are refering a site which is already dropped or 'Cross linking network' , or some thing else you mean to say...?

benc007,

'Cross linking network' means if you have 20 projects online and you use to link all these project with each others. It creates a network of linking each site with the other one.

ciml its still PR0 .. I 100% sure its a clean category. I have checked all websites again .. it just doesn't make any sense.

In terms of Google penalties, 'bad neighbourhoods' would be pages (probably domains) that Google have assigned a serious penalty to, or more likely that they banned. Having some duplicate content or having sites on the same server would have nothing to do with this. I don't remember any of the 'catchable' penalty domains I saw as looking like they had automatic penalties.

I don't think you can 'catch' the newer, phrase-focused penalties in the same way.

seofreak, I suspect you just need to wait another PR update.
