Would Google Penalize This?

We have satisfactory listings in Google for our site, but I'd like to use our similar domain name too. Let's say we have mydomain.com and also mydomain.net.

I'd like to use the mydomain.net to redirect to a unique new page hosted on the same IP as mydomain.com with links to various parts of mydomain.com.

It's not a mirror site, nor a simple duplicate page on a slightly different domain name. It's really an alternative entrance of unique design that focusses on particular sections of our main site, not all of it.

Would Google take a dim view of this?

Is there a risk in using our dormant domain name?

I don't think that there is any problem in this. But it would be nice to hear some comments from members who have experiences with use of .com and .net domains for the same website.

Doorways...boring. Easy to spot... Bad for the user... etc.

Take the 2nd and any additional domains you have and set them up with a 301 redirect so that everyone ends up at your main domain. And focus hard on making that domain a great site.

An alternative to a 301 would be to take the pages that you want to link to on the current site and move them to the new site.

I'd say that what you are suggesting is risky, even if it is ok today it might not be tomorrow.

I would say yes. However, the chances of them knowing is possibly minimal, but not worth the risk.

Good sound advise is, don't do it.

Thank you for your input.
I'll not use our other domain names.
We already have a great content packed site doing well in Google (pre and post Florida) so I don't want to jeapordize it.

I currently simply park them at my domain registrar, and they are redirected by the registrar to our main site.

*I've not even risked submitting them to any SEs*, in case they are viewed as 'Mirror sites', and incur a penalty.

Am I correct in assuming that simply submitting the alternatives mydomain.net etc. to SEs would be risky.

Seems such a waste.

i think it would be a waste of time. the se's would most probably not list them due to the duplicate content.
id leave all as is and rely on the parked domains to catch the users who mis type your domain
