One of the more colorful theories floating about Florida was that Google simply acted on all the spam reports by hand.

Sure makes you think though...

That's certainly a good theory, although there are still some very prominent "black hats" out there, who will undoubtedly have been reported by multiple people, and yet some lesser sites that have "disappeared".

Interesting theory, but it doesn't hold water from what I see.

The boss had it with spam & ordered an execution-style hit on the spammy categories. Kill them all & let God sort it out. Shoot first, ask questions later.

Makes me think you just increased the number of spam reports that will be filled out.

The filters were around (though not discussed much) before Florida, but with the massive increase in affected pages I could only see it as an automatic filter. Also, where networks of sites are partially affected I think it's pretty clear that the decisions on which pages to hit for which ky phrases came from the software.

As far as I'm concerned the jury's out on the recent extentions of 'can have PR but not pass it on' penalties for high-PR sites believed to be selling PageRank. As there are comparitively few PR8s and PR9s, that issue could have been dealt with by hand review.

WOW! Look at all these spam reports we have. Let's just mix up the results for these terms all together. Brand new sites from #1-30. Now everyone's happy! Right?

It's fresh, there's no spam and the tattle-tails are gone too!

If they were there'd be no index. Im sure most sites have been reported justfully or un justfully at one time or another, It'd be like a webolocaust.

Good theory for a laugh tho ;)

Yeah right ;) LOL..

it would need dozen times the number of dmoz editors to do that. Can i apply for a job of spam-weeding-editors @ G :)

Really? I would think the number of reports would be pretty low. Only the highly competitive sectors would be involved.
