I don't know if anyone else has noticed this, but I was wondering about the reason for there being a bunch of links sits and malls on Google top pages for commercial keywords.
I couldn't work out why some sites had almost no references to the key words on the listed page at all.
I've been thinking that Google is now looking deeper into the sites to see if the site is truly relevant, so I tried a little experiment. I couldn't get anywhere with kw 1 kw 2 shop, so I did a little experiment.
I added a link to my links page with kw1 kw2 shops in the H tags (which is still relevant cos it's a list of other shops that sell widgets of this nature).
My links page was spidered today and I have an instant number two listing for kw1 kw2 shops, even though the word shops does not appear anywhere on the page at all.
I'm still tweaking about with it but thought I'd share that.

Could you clarify? Did You add a header tag to your links page or add a link to (which page?) a page with anchor text as "key1 key2 shops"?

It was a total accident, so I haven't quite worked it out yet.
I will post again when I'm sure. Other people will probably be able to work it out quicker than me!
It may even have been that the initial link which caused me to notice it was from another site - I just twigged when I was wondering why so many results were of internal pages, even for very relevant sites. I am still experimenting, since the good Google fairy is shining on me at the moment and visiting my site once every couple of days.
I became convinced because when my index page reappeared for some kw's it had my links page attached so I knew where to look for the hint.
