It has been noted before that Google is running a "catalogue" section where you can browse catalogues.

Today I used this section to look for a webcam. Google's search function within the catalogues returned results where the search word (webcam) was highlighted in the images.

This would mean that Google is able to scan and ocr the images and that they can find a certain word in an image.

The implications are obvious. Since this technique exists at Google, and since it is obviously being applied, we can assume that Google is able to do the same with the images on all other web pages.

Here's the URL to search for "camera": http://catalogs.google.com/catalogs?q=camera

Do you realize what you are seeing? That is the real time matching and highlighting of graphic based text. This is a first in search engine history.

We've had arguments in the past over whether se's could could read text in graphics. Some se's have claimed to have experimented with it - after all, character recognition software is pretty cheap these days. Well there you have it. Living breathing proof that they CAN read text in graphics.

Thanks, Brett. It seems I've missed that one when I browsed through the older messages. Amazing stuff.
