If I was banned would the bot still crawl my site?

If a penalty were applied for, say, hidden text, the answer is yes. Googlebot will drop by to see if you've fixed it.

Well, that's my understanding anyway, but this is an area in which I have no experience (never been banned) so I have to believe what I read in this forum - well that's not true, I don't have to believe anything and I'm pretty skeptical about most things.

If Googlebot visits but doesn't grab any pages, check your robots.txt file (none is normally ok but a blank file may be better). If that's ok, make sure that your pages are linked with simple html links. Javascript, etc will not cause problems but robots must be able to navigate your site based purely on plain html links.

You might also consider validating critical pages.
