Is it possible for some sub page to have better rank than index page of website?
For example if page is www.****.xxx and subpage is www.xxx.xxx/xxx and if www.xxx.xxx/xxx get more hits from other sites then is it possible that it would have better rank than index page www.xxx.xxx

Donot panic,

if your sub-page has a pr of n, then your index page will get a pr of n+1. Only it is taking time to update on each center.

You click your sub-page again, you will see your pr varying. Same case with the index page.

Best of luck

There's no reason a sub-page of a site can't have a higher rank than the index page. Both depend on the same factors to rank well.

For example, a sub-page could have more incoming links than the index page.

Of course, in the real world, most webmasters link to and ask for links to their index page more than to particular sub pages. This leads to a tendancy for the index page on most sites to rank highest, then the other pages to rank in terms of their link-distance from the index page.

On the other hand, a significant minority prefers to promote their more specific (and hence usually deeper on the site) pages at the expense of a more generic index page. On those sites, the sub-pages will tend to out-rank the index page.

There is NO n+1 rule.

It tends to happen due to pyramid-like linking structures, and most links going to the top level, but it is by no means guarenteed.

There is NO n+1 rule

But normally you can see that and I am sure mushy will notice that soon.

On one of my sites, the master article list page is 2 pts higher than the index page or any other page on the site and has been for some time.

No, it IS quite possible to have a higher PR on a page deeper in the directory structure than the home page. I know - had it happen to me for a few months on one of my sites. All depends on the power of the links that point to your site - if a bunch of high PR sites link to a sub-page that is deep down in the directory structure - the sub-page can easily outrank the home page if the home page itself doesn't have many powerful links pointing to it.

The above statement by Jim is all that needs to be said on the matter.

Of course it's possible. Google will return, what is sees as, the most relevant pages, if these are sub pages....so what?
