I manage a group of 25 sites. The google backward links of all the sites have gone by HALF. though i have found 50+ new backward links for my these sites but google has ignored even my previous backward links and also lowered the page rank of all of these sites.
pls guide with this regard. why this?

sounds like the ol cross linking penalty to me.

To come back from that, you will have to double the number of inbound links from outside your own 'space'.

I am even wondering if Google are now discounting reciprocal links.

I have the same problem, but I noticed something funny today.

If I search for "www.mydomain.com" (with quotes) all of the sites that have links to mine show up. If I search link:www.mydomain.com I only get 2 of them. None of these are javascript links and some of them are my internal links.

I only have three sites that I have recip. links with. So I doubt that it's a recip. link penalty. What I suspect is that somehow these sites have not been crawled in a while and to keep the backlink count fresh Google may have some sort of exparation on backlinks. (just my theory) That would explain why they show up in a search for the domain, but not for the backlink search.

reciprocal links work .. I know a PR7 site which has just build on reciprocating links which are not even related to the site. As much it hurts to see that he has a directory of links that also link back to him just to get higher PR .. have to admit it is working and pretty good.

Two of my PR 5 sites have went from having hundreds of back links to having none, even though they are contained in many hundreds more pages , many with higher rank.

I dont think ive done anything untoward, so any ideas what has happened?

I just ran a check on a few sites (including some competators) that I know were showing a few hundred backlinks just two months ago. Looks like everyone I checked is loosing backlinks.

If I had to guess it seems like Google is playing with the backlinks probably as some sort of upgrade. This being the case I would bet that number of backlinks doesn't have much weight right now, then again, if everyone is loosing the same percentage, then it is probably best to have as many as possible.

My SERPs are not scaring me right now and I know my incomming links are still strong so I'm not going to worry just yet.

I wouldnt be too relaxed- 3 months ago - #1, 2months ago #5, 1 month ago until now - not in top #1000!

This is for a search term that has 5,000,000 competing pages, and my site is an honest related directory - not spam.
