Google Tracking URLs

I have seen i in multiple areas

I figure this is just small scale experiments but as of today they are doing it in at least three different sectors

google.com/url?sa=U&start=X&q=http://etc../&e=Y

X = serp position
Y = static number which appears to be the same across industries.

What do you make of it?

Yep, they do this now and again. I think it's to try to measure quality after they tweak the listings.

Presumably, the more clicks towards the top of the rankings, the better?

I've been noticing the tracking on all searches I've been doing over the past week or longer.

I can't find any SERPs that don't have the tracking.

<added> Another WW member kindly reminded me to delete my cookies, clear my cache, and try again. Which I did and no longer see the tracking. There was a thread some time back that explained about this, but haven't been able to find that thread. <added>

Y = static number which appears to be the same across industries.

Most probably a category (dmoz?) id,then.
