Value of links from other sites

I've heard that links from other sites are increased in value by Google. This makes sense.

I'm wondering though - what's the real value difference of a link from another site?

If I give a PR5 link, and receive a PR4 link, am I getting a net benefit or a loss?

If you already have links to other sites, then the affect on your PageRank of adding one more will normally be very small. Also, moderate changes to your PR normally won't make much difference to your rankings.

A good link is a good link, the fact that the page has one notch of Toolbar PR less is pretty irrelevant IMO.

Quit focusing on PR.

A link is a link and with the proper anchor text it will do you more good than a link from a high PR site with the wrong anchor text.
