Make it quick enough to load (<20kB?). But say what you have to say.
Google is a full text index search engine. Better get all the critical words on your page rather than leaving them out because of size worries.
If you have two paragraphs on your page.
One paragraph with the unique word: "Wertygology"
The second paragraph with the unique word: "Giberishinty"
I would not like to miss out on the possible search for: Wertygology Giberishinty - just because I want to make my pages as small as possible.
For the rest I have yet to see proof for smaller webpages outranking bigger ones - if that is what your question was about ;)
On a more serious note - I've been told Google doesn't index anything over 100K (html / text, not images). I'm not sure if it's true, but I'd say if your page is over 100K it's too big for ANYONE, let alone Google.
I've also heard that it's better to keep html to a minimum, and text to a maximum. The practical value of this I'm not sure about, but I've found that using CSS along with 3-500 word articles makes it entirely possible to have very small pages indeed - the site I'm currently working on is under 6K for every page.
