Does crosslinking apply within a site?

Does linking pages within a site count as crosslinking?

From reading various threads, I think that crosslinking applies to sites excessively linking to each other.

(I am relatively new to this so please correct me if I am wrong)

However, is it crosslinking when pages within one site are linked to other pages within the same site?

For example, my index page has a navigation bar that links to ten pages. These pages each open in a new window.

There are also five tabs on the index page that change the content of the main window. These five pages also have the tabs and the navigation bar on them.

In addition, I also have a block of text with all of the links in the navigation bar and tabs, repeated at the bottom of the page, in case someone visits the site with graphics turned off.

I have now created over 20 pages that are optimized for over 20 keywords.

I am thinking of putting a button bar at the very bottom of the index page with each button linking to one of the optimized pages. In other words, more than 20 buttons.

This bar would be repeated on each of the more than 20 optimized pages.

Is this crosslinking?

Is this wrong for some other reason?

To have this look half way attractive, the buttons our only 10 x 20 px, and would not have the name of the link on them. Someone would have to put the mouse over the button to read where it goes. Is this a problem.

I am not talking about hidden links. Each button would be clearly visible.

Any help anyone can give me to clarify this matter will be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Harris

Hello Harris,

crosslinking is between several sites, not within one site. So don't worry about it. Having a lot of links between the pages will however spread the pagerank equally over these pages. That is not necessariy wrong, so it's up to you to decide if that is something you want or not.

Size of 10 x 20 px is no problem, however link text might work better than the alt-text to put some keywords for the page being linked.

"These pages each open in a new window."

That's awful.

Size of 10 x 20 px is no problem, however link text might work better than the alt-text to put some keywords for the page being linked.

The description of each page is long, 5 or 6 words, including the keywords.

This would result in a long, intrusive, block of text links at the bottom of the page. If I make the size of the text small enough to look good, I am afraid that I might run into search engine problems with the small text. How likely a problem is this?

"These pages each open in a new window."

That's awful.

Why is this a problem? Each window is only one level deep. For example, to join the mail list, read FAQs, download some forms, etc. When they close the window, they are back on the home page where the main information, and links deeper into the site are.

When I originally had each action change the content of the main window, we lost people when they finished.

And yes, the pages repeated the nav bar, had text links at the bottom, instructions to go back, and even links that would send them back.

I could not seem to do anything to get them to continue on the site.

This way when they finnish, the window closes and they are back were I want them. Most people now go on to other areas of the site.

I am relatively new to this and very willing to learn. Please let me know if there is a better way!

Thank you,
Harris

I vaguely remember a thread speculating about penalty for doing indeed heavy crosslinking pages of a site, but I can't remember specifics.

I would suppose it could get a problem if on every page every page is linked to more than twice (e.g., one link at the top, one at the bottom, one in the navigation bar to the right). But it's always the question whether this is detected by Google.

I would stick to conventionel navigation as many sites do it, and you'll be safe.
