If there is a problem, how does one find out? If not, how does one fall out and get back in?
As all of you know this is serious business. Any insight greatly appreciated.
Maybe it is everflux. Something has changed for sure, but time will tell (I've certainly never seen this old favorite disappear before).
Something's changed. I've been looking around all day, but haven't put my finger on it yet. I'm hoping it's just normal day-to-day stuff as well.
One of the SERPs in the above referenced market changed dramatically; the top 15 dropped down to number 30, and were replaced with sites I've never seen before.
Upon some research, I discovered a competitor jacked all of my content. Naturally I sent them a cease and desist letter.
Would them copying my content cause me to drop in rankings?
What else can cause a drop like that?
Does Google enforce penalties like this?
PErhaps just a Google glitch?
I don't spam or use redirects
Search for some word combinations that would unique to your page(s) and you might turn up odd things that would provide further clues.
If some of your pages are missing in action but others are fine, at least you know your site is not banned, it's a page-by-page probem.
No I don't interlink the sites. Of course I have provided partner links to them but that is it.
I finally found my site buried in the rankings. I had gone from #1 for a primary keyword to #205. Had been #1 for weeks. I checked and only the index pages for my other sites are the missing. Perhaps it is Everflux. Can only hope so.
It's the mystery that kills me. I realize that Google is programmed for searches and that is their primary responsibility. However, since dramatic actions can seriously affect those of us providing the content it would be helpful and I think ethical to provide some feedback, however broad, to those with legitimate questions about status. Even an automated system would be fine.
Pie in the sky stuff I know but being in the dark results in a lot of stubbed toes.
That's how it seems. This particular website has not changed in 12 months. Most the pages are still around, but a handful, specifically the index, have just gone. Peculiar, and certainly an indication that something has changed or is changing.
Is Google purging sites aggressively?
I wouldn't worry too much if you are even close to semi-clean. I've seen a lot of clean sites dropping in the results and floating in and out in just about every industry imaginable. It would be good for business if you were the type to take advantage of peoples fear. Many site owners are frantic thinking that their previous designer/optimization firm did something wrong - not the case in most instances.
Seems when the serps increased so dramatically a while back it was like they knocked over a trash can and let everything spill out. I have never seen so much porn/adult, search strings, mirrors, and hidden text spill into so many results. Looking forward to the day Yahoo starts using their own results once again or Google decides to throw something that resembles a filter into place.
It sickens me to say that I can find more "relevant" sites using MSN search than Google on many topics. I find more people also reverting to MSN including my daughters school and my wife's work (very large non-profit). Amazing how many people outside of the business talk about this, and yet I hear so little about it from others in these forums (except those that have discussed it privately with me). Let's just hope they get their act together and get back to their regularly scheduled program :)
Sorry Google/GoogleGuy but it is becoming noticeable there is a big problem.
Actually, some people think that the average is averaging out. As I suppose it should do...
As regards choosing one search engine over another, well, one can always do that. Sure there are many who advocate their own favourite search engine over others, but if anyone is "sickened", as The Contractor is, by people choosing one search engine over another, well, I'd recommend some time away from the square-headed girlfriend.
I don't mean to come across as negative as I perhaps seem, so let me add that I have endless smiles and frowns as my sites float and sink, but I have never had cause to feel "sickened" by anything other than the fact that my sites aren't the best. And that's not the fault of Google, MSN, AltaVista or anyone else. Except me.
If my sites are crap, that's MY problem...

Ha! Who said anything about my sites? I am very happy with our company site etc.. Not sure who you are referring to, about the girlfriend....Wow take a pill guy and calm down ;)
Talk to many of the people have been around a while and ask them if say Googles results are better in general then 6-months or two years ago.. I know I have talked to many privately that hang out here that I know and trust.
If you don't see it great ;)
edited I don't mean to offend you if your sites floated in when the can got knocked over. I say more power to those that can get away with 100-200 duplicate sites getting great serps. It does offend me when a term such as low caffeine chocolate brings up pages of adult listings like it did a week or so ago.
Keeping my fingers crossed...
I went from #8 on my highest traffic keyphrase last month down to #51. If I was depending on that one keyphrase for a large part of my traffic, I would have been screwed.
Luckily, even though it brough me more traffic than any other keyphrase, it was still only 0.9% of my SE referrals. The 17,000 other keyphrases kept it from being a total catastrophe.
It sounds to me like you got hit with an algo change. You are missing something that has gained in importance that your competitors have.
