Is it just me? Or maybe it's always been like this?

But I seem to remember doing a keyword search in google directory listed sites that are in google directory.

At the moment it's returning regular SERPS.

The start of a directory update?

Yes, strange, looks like regular serps without snippets to me as well.

Yep, this has been going on since the 23rd of September. Regular google results, without description or snippets for sites not in the directory.

It has? Was there a thread on here about it I missed?

Hmmm.... that's the problem with pre-moderation. I suspect your post entered the forum after pre-mod right down the bottom somewhere....

Several days before I wrote a letter to Google about its directory update. But I got very disappointed with their answer, which is exactly the same as the one I saw in another forum, seems they always have the same answer to whatever questions. Below is Google's wrote-back.

Thank you for writing to Google. We understand the frustration that this
situation may cause you. As you may know, the Google Directory is built
on work done by the Open Directory Project (ODP), a network of thousands
of volunteers managed by Netscape. Please be assured that we are actively
working with the ODP to find a solution to this situation. We plan to
update our directory as soon as possible.

We appreciate your patience during this process, and thanks again for
taking time to contact us.

Regards,
The Google Team

I also noticed the irregular SERP in its directory. I guess Google is doing some jobs on its directory. Is it the sign of its upcoming update?
