"Search pages from (country)"

Can a specific tld hosted in another country...

at the moment we have one dedicater server in the UK which has our generic .com tld.

we have a virtual server in germany which hosts our .de site.

we are redesigning / building the .de site and it will also need a dedicated server, so to save money we'd like to host it in the uk...

but i'm not clear about whether my .de site, hosted in the UK would appear for a search in google.de for "pages from germany".

not a direct answer to your question, but this bit of information may help:
on google.de you have three options:
search the web (default)
search pages in German language
search pages from Germany.

Since users are lazzy (including myself), most searches are made from the default.
If I search for a Keyword that is the same in German and English, I may switch to "Search pages in German language", if I want a page (e.g. a shop) in German.

The only advantage of the third option is: It excludes the pages from other German speaking countries, like Switzerland and Austria, but the results are not much different from the second option, since those two countries together may have less than 15% of the pages in German language on the web.

To sum it up: Whether your

.de site, hosted in the UK would appear for a search in google.de for "pages from germany"

or not, may not make much of a difference. At least the language detection works fine and does not bother about the place of the server.

hi instand, thanks for the thoughts. i was thinking along those lines too.

i consider it very unlikely that users would search straight away for the "pages from germany". i think they would only use that choice if the other searches didn't return the results they were looking for.

the money we would save by not having to have a dedicated server in each country (spain too) and the hassle of not having to maintain 3 separate servers are very positive arguments.
