Facinating story/interview with Krishna Bharat, Google's principal "scientist" about the Google News service.

We want to create a newspaper that's suitable for everyone. Personalization is a much grander challenge.

Great, in-depth interview, I now see why they're still in BETA.

It is a really interesting article. Especially the aspects where he talks about the service being like a newspaper, and how the service copes with the percieved 'news worthyness' of different stories according to PoVs.

I swear I searched for the article here before I posted, but it's good it's getting some exposure - very well written article. (entire ojr site is well done too)

Krishna Bharat is one interesting guy. Searching for his name with the word "google" comes up with over 1500 results!

(hey how come GoogleGuy and him are never in the same place at the same time... lol, nah)

The beta tag still hangs on Google News, but in the year since it launched, the computer-generated news portal has achieved alpha status for millions of users looking for the latest news.

surely alpha comes before beta in the development process....

Having a site that is included in the 4,500 sites that feed Google this makes interesting reading... Especially on how to further optomize a sites pages for a happy Google news bot.(that "lives" on our site..). We seem to get an article on Google news within 10-15mins of being posted -

good job Google news!

I agree, lazerzubb. Krishna is a very googly guy--smart and nice, and a product like Google News really does a fantastic job of showing lots of different viewpoints on a subject. The team of folks who work on news is pretty small considering the positive impact that they have for lots of users:

news is super...why don't you guys give them a larger team and allow us users to get some personalization features...I still use my.netscape as my homepage cause it gives excellent personalization...and that was done years ago...but it's a classic.

Yeah,
I'd say Google News has a excellent News service with 4500 recources, but If Krishna was here in this forum, I'd say to him:
Well done Krishna You've done a excellent Job of the spidering bit, ever thought of adding more personalization?
lol

Good Gawd. Really GoogleGuy. When you are over here at Webmasterworld, we don't expect you to suck up to the bosses like you have to do at the Googleplex. Hmm...I just found a picture of GoogleGuy on the Net:

You can't access Google news through the API right?
I'd like to have this feature as well (since XML feeds are unlikely to be forthcoming?)

As of today, Google News Espaņa [news.google.es] (Spanish) started. Just as the German news, they get the data form 700 news sources. That is more than the 500 French and the 250 Italian sites.
